Gohan-No-Tomo: The Best Friend of Rice

Do you know a term “Gohan-no-tomo” in Japanese? It means the friend of rice, a companion that goes really well with rice, and we’re sure all the Japanese have their favorites. To introduce simple but deep rice culture of Japan, we gathered some great Gohan-no-tomo examples for you, from traditional to something unique. If you want to experience rice with Gohan-no-tomo in the best condition, you have to get a good rice-cooker first. The rice-cooker by Panasonic features 6 layer diamond fluorine coated inner pan to optimise the cooking process to best-cook the rice soft and sticky.

Now you have the right rice. Then the first try of Gohan-no-tomo has to be Dairiki-natto, an award winning fermented soybeans is the classic example, made in Niigata prefecture, one of the biggest producer and renowned place for Koshihikari, the high-end Japanese rice.

Being 100% honest to you, we have to admit that not every single Japanese loves Natto, so don’t worry if you don’t like it. We have the easier choice for you.
Sake-ruibe-zuke is one of the specialties from Hokkaido, marinating the natural fresh salmon with Ikura (salmon roe) in a special soy sauce. Topping up with the salmon on the bed of steamy-hot rice makes an easy but super delicious genuine dish at home!

Another luxury tweak for rice experience is the easy-seasoning kit with Matsutake mushrooms and scallops. What you have to do is, just put some rice and the seasoning (plus some water) in an inner pan and press start button, then you’ll have the aromatic Takikomi Gohan (seasoned rice) ready to serve.  It is as easy as that, but tastes as superb as the one served at an established Japanese restaurant.

And, if there is some left-overs from the rice dinner, microwave it in the morning and put it in Thermos’ food container that keeps the rice warm until your lunch time (approximately for 6 hours). Take it with you for the healthy lunch at office or picnic, or for your kids to bring to school.
